The figure on the left is wrapped in a Mexican blanket, representative of the horrific femicide rates in Mexico, border cities, and Central and South America. The figure on the right is wrapped in a star quilt, representative of the MMIWG2S epidemic of our native sisters in the US and Canada. Thankful that May 5th is an honorary MMIWG2S awareness day, although I would like to imagine that the world we live in is changing and more people are aware/active about the MMIWG2S epidemic and femicide occurring globally. It’s not just bad apples, it is also the racism, lack of equality and non-existent human rights for BIPOC people at the systemic level that allow and perpetuate these crimes. I hope this art offering inspires love, community, and a shift in the colonial narrative. 🖤
